Volunteering provides allotment space for Wiltshire school children

Volunteers from Aster Group have teamed up with Chirton C of E Primary School in Devizes, Wiltshire to provide pupils with a new allotment space. This new space will help children get closer to nature and find out if they have green fingers.

The work was helped along by local farmer, Nigel Thursby who had a grandchild at the school, and provided the materials needed for the project. This included the creation of two allotment beds, two composting bins as well as a further two raised planting beds for Chirton School pupils to nurture.

A 13-strong team of employees from Aster Group volunteered their time through their charity, the Aster Foundation.

The new space provides opportunities for pupils to engage in practical learning outside of the classroom supported by both parents and teachers. Headteacher at Chirton C of E Primary School, Amy Bekker-Wrench, said: “I just wanted to send my most grateful thanks to the team from Aster for all the work they put into constructing our new allotment, we are so delighted with it!”

Adam Hackett, transformation director - sustainability at Aster Group, said: “Being able to bring colleagues together for a great cause is fantastic for team building, having fun and providing that sense of fulfilment that is so important for our physical and mental wellbeing. For the school, this will be a great opportunity to instil important green values in the next generation and give the children a fun and rewarding way of understanding the importance of biodiversity and looking after the planet.”

The Aster Foundation has pledged to improve the lives of 40,000 people by 2030, with community projects like the allotments a key part of their programme of engaging and connecting with communities.

Through its mental wellness and resilience impact programme, the Foundation currently trains and educates around 2,000 people a year and aims to improve the mental health of 20,000 people by 2030.
