Construction on new Plymstock homes begins

Construction has started at a housing development in Horn Lane, Plymstock, which will see 28 new homes offered for sale and rent by the end of the summer.

Ethical housing developer and landlord Aster Group is building the scheme, called the Rowans. It has earmarked 14 properties for open-market sale and 12 for shared ownership. It is also building two specially-designed flats for wheelchair users that will be offered under affordable rent.

In November 2016, Plymouth County Council approved Aster’s plans for a two-storey scheme on the site of the former Downham School, which has been vacant since 2012.

The development incorporates a design based on community feedback to initial proposals. It will retain access between Horn Lane and nearby fields and be two-storeys high, one floor smaller than the original plans, to ensure it is in keeping with surrounding buildings.

Amanda Williams, group development director at Aster Group, said: “As an ethical developer it’s crucial for us to ensure that our schemes match the needs and desires of the local communities. The feedback on the initial designs has been incorporated into the plans for the scheme and we’re really pleased with the result. Work is now underway to provide a supply of much-needed new homes, on otherwise underused land, which meets local needs.

“Plymstock is a popular suburb for Plymouth commuters but housing demand is currently far outstripping supply, driving up prices in the area and making it difficult for first-time buyers to find a home they can afford. By offering a range of ownership options at The Rowans, we hope to make home-ownership more achievable for the young people and families that may otherwise struggle to buy in the area.”
