OUR COMMENT ON THE HOUSING MINISTER’S SPEECH AT HOMES 2018

“It was heartening to hear Mr Malthouse reiterate the government’s desire for shared ownership to play a key role in solving the housing crisis. Our sector needs to change the narrative around shared ownership so that it is viewed as a genuine option, not just as a stepping stone. It offers homeowners security, and valuable equity, whether they staircase to full ownership or not.

“It’s perhaps not surprising that we didn’t hear another major policy announcement from the minister today, given the run of positive moves the government has made on housing recently. I believe this shows that the minister has a plan in place and is committed to putting it into action. There is a clear intention to put housing associations at the centre of this plan and we will do all we can to support the government in seeing it to fruition.”
