Young apprentice sets the foundations for a career with Aster Group

Young adults across the South are being given the opportunity to develop a career in the trade industry with developer and landlord, Aster Group.

One of the business’ apprentices, Liam McCaffrey, 23, is six months into a four-year apprenticeship with the Wells-based company in its electrical team.

After leaving college, Liam decided that university wasn’t the right path for him so he began considering alternatives. He came across Aster’s website and discovered an opportunity he couldn’t miss.

Alongside his apprenticeship Liam is also studying one day a week at Wiltshire college to achieve an NVQ 3 in electrical installation.

Of his experience so far, Liam said: “Every stage of my apprenticeship so far has really helped me to develop. You’re taught everything you need to know by qualified electricians who are so willing to help and support you.

“The only limitation there is to what you can learn is your own motivation.

“I would urge anyone struggling to make headway in a seemingly endless trail of dead end jobs to seriously consider the potential that an apprenticeship can offer.”

Karin Gibbs-Warne, from Aster said: “Our apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn new skills and to get some real hands-on experience.

“Liam has been so willing and eager to learn and he is a great example of how apprenticeships give young people the chance to start out in a career they are really interested in.”

Aster, which employs 1,300 people from Cornwall to Hampshire, provided 11 apprenticeships last year. Ranging from customer services, business administration and skilled trades such as electrical and plumbing, as well as trainee surveyor and digital skills roles.
