Fun activities for the summer holidays

For many families the six-week holiday is spent finding ways to entertain the children and spend quality time together, often whilst not having to break the bank! Here’s a few ideas for days out and activities to enjoy without needing to spend:

Visit the local library – If you have a local library then it’s a great place to visit. If your child is a bookworm then it’s a treasure trove or if not it’s a great opportunity to get them to explore. You can spend time reading in the library together or check out a book or two to enjoy at home.

Visit a garden centre – Most garden centres have different areas, whether that’s an aquatic centre, pet shop, indoor and outdoor plants or toys. There will be something to excite the children, you can learn about plants and animals or find a toy or garden game to take home.

Picnic in the sunshine – When the sun is shining, pack up a cool bag of snacks and sandwiches and head to your local park or green space.

Free museums – There are a whole host of free museums in England, the Money Saving Expert website has a handy guide and map. Pick one close to you and head out for a day trip!

Family sports day – Get the family up and about in the garden or local park with a sports day activity. You can get creative at home first collating sports equipment such as eggs and spoons and then plan a day of family friendly competition with races and activities.

Photo scavenger hunt – Challenge the family to spend a few hours in the local park or countryside taking pictures on phones or cameras – you can set challenges such as the most beautiful flower, butterflies or wildlife.
