Tackling condensation and mould
Mould can happen when there’s too much moisture in the air. Moisture is produced by steam from cooking and bathing, as well as washing and drying laundry. Follow these tips to help reduce the amount of condensation in your home:
- Cook with pan lids on
- Reduce your shower time to six minutes and keep the bathroom door shut
- Fill your bath with cold water first then add the hot - it will reduce the steam by 90%
- Hang your washing outside to dry, or hang it in the bathroom with the door closed and a window slightly open or extractor fan on
- If you use a tumble drier, make sure it is vented to the outside or that it is a condenser.
Condensation and mould are common issues and can usually be easily resolved. However, if you notice permanent dark or discoloured patches on the walls or ceiling, which have a 'tide mark', this could be a sign of damp which will require further investigation.
