Save energy and money this winter
How to save energy
Stop using standby
If you leave your electrical items on standby they still use up electricity. Turning them off at the plug could save you an average of £30 a year – going up to between £50 and £80 for households with more appliances and gadgets.
Change your energy habits
Making small changes to your everyday routine can also help to reduce your energy bills. Washing up in a washing-up bowl for example could save you up to £25 a year compared to letting the tap run.
Turning down the temperature of your washing machine by just ten degrees could also save you over £50 a year.
Financial help
If you were born on or before 5 November 1953, you may be eligible for between £100-£300.
If you receive certain benefits you could claim £25 for every period of seven days when the temperature reaches zero degrees or below.
If you meet the criteria you could receive a one-off payment of £140 off of your energy bills.
Keep talking
If you think you might miss a payment to your energy supplier it’s a good idea to speak to them in advance as they may be able to give you advice, or help you find a way to manage your payments.
Switch and save
Regularly comparing energy providers through a comparison site can be a good way to help you save money and get the best deals. All you need to do is give a few details about your home and how many people live there, your current tariff, and an estimate of how much energy you use.
